Powers and Abilities : The full extent of the Overmaster's abilities are unknown. He has claimed to have cosmic awareness, and while certainly not omnipotent, has exhibited great foresight into both past and present events. He wields cosmic energy and has used it in both constructive and destructive ways - he has been able to increase the power of a metahuman's abilities, as he did with Ice, or channel the energy into devastating energy bursts projected from his hands. The Overmaster is also twenty-five feet tall, and possesses superhuman strength and durability. He exhibits total immunity to elemental attacks.

Weaknesses : The Overmaster is vulnerable to his own powers. Will Everett III, the second Amazing Man, was able to defeat the Overmaster by absorbing his cosmic energy blasts and then deflecting them back at him.

History : An enormous extraterrestrial with a god complex, the Overmaster claimed to be 580 million years old. Considering himself a celestial force beyond good and evil, the Overmaster made it his mission in the universe to judge planets, going from world to world and sending his minions to test that world's warriors. If a world were found unworthy, the Overmaster destroyed it and moved on. It is unknown just how many worlds he destroyed before he came to Earth.

Up[on his arrival on Earth, the Overmaster send his personal strike force, the Cadre, to put humanity to the test. The Justice League fought and defeated the Cadre, forcing the Overmaster to admit that Earth was a planet worthy of his attentions. With a greater interest in Earth, the Overmaster began manipulating events to his liking, bringing about the rise of the Extremists and recruiting heralds to form a new Cadre. Among those recruited to be part of this new Cadre was Tora Olafsdotter, better known as Ice.

With Earth of no more use to him, the Overmaster announced his intention to wipe the Earth clean of life in one week. When the heroes of Earth rose against him, the Overmaster dispatched his new Cadre to eliminate them. The tide of the battle turned when Ice turned against the Overmaster. In a rage, the Overmaster murdered Ice, only to incur the wrath of her friends. Though assailed by the might of the Justice League, the villain seemed to be invulnerable, until the Amazing Man deflected his own blasts upon him. Wounded, the Overmaster fell from his spaceship, falling into the depths of an icy cavern.

Description : The City of Tomorrow. Metropolis's heyday begins in the post World War II era - a time of prosperity and growth for the city. Metropolis's prosperity continues to this day, despite a number of alien invasions and super-villain attacks. It's resilience can be primarily attributed to the efforts of its staunchest defender, Superman.

Located near New York City and Gotham City on the United States' east coast, Metropolis is divided into six boroughs, and occupies three islands and areas along the coasts of the Hob's and West Rivers. On islands are the boroughs of New Troy, St. Martin's Island, and Hell's Gate. On the riverbank is Queensland Park along the West River to the south, and on Hob's River to the north are Park Ridge and Bakerline. New Troy, on the center island, is a center of business, like New York's Manhattan. It is home to the University of Metropolis and Centennial Park on the west side; and the Daily Planet, the LexCorp Tower, the Newstime building, and Galaxy Communications in the eastern business district. New Troy also has a less prosperous neighborhood called Hob's Bay, commonly known as Suicide Slum. Metropolis' nickname is the 'Big Apricot'.

Location : Gotham County, in southeastern New Jersey.

Description : Gotham City is a faded glory. Since World War II, crime in the city has risen and the citizens have feared for their safety. This urban crucible, once home to the original Green Lantern, would birth one of the first of a new generation of crimefighters to deal with its illness - the Batman. Gotham City has seen more than its share of turmoil, including a relatively recent devastating earthquake that resulted in the city being temporarily legally isolated from the United States. Gotham recovered, with the aid of Lex Luthor, but many of its residents did not return.

Bruce Wayne is credited as the generous cultural benefactor who footed the repair bill after a conflict between Batman and Poison Ivy resulted in structural damages.

Hamilton St. Theatre - Address not given. Phone number listed as 555-2821. The theatre is the venue for everything from "A Christmas Carol" and "The Nutcracker" during the Christmas season, avant-garde productions, Broadway-style musicals (including something called "I'm in Love with Batman," apparently), classical concerts, and rock groups.

Mother May I? Productions - 7612 N. Greenwood Avenue (storefront), 555-7529. Children's theater.

Improvalicious - 1060 North Front St., 555-3991. Home to an improv comedy troupe. Friday through Saturday 8 and 10:30 PM, Sunday 4 and 8 PM.

Kitschy Kat Clothing and Accessories - 33 Robinson Street. Described as a 4,000 sq. ft. thrift store filled with unusual lamps, mirrors, barware, furniture, etc. Open every day 11-5.

Costume - 144 Sprang Galleria, Upper Level, entrance through Tung Sing Chinese Food. One of a kind clothing shop, run by designer Susie Mai. "All of her clothing is crafted from the confiscated costuming of Gotham's incarcerated villains." I can't really add anything to that, folks.

Wash Your Mouth Out! - 82 West California Avenue, 555-2001. Bath and beauty products. Reference is made to local evening news anchor Andre Yu, who shops there. Open 10-5 weekdays, 10-9 weekends. They have a free catalog and mail order service.

Fork - 342 Market Street, 555-3675. Upscale eatery. Average entree $20 and under. Menu includes turkey meatloaf with spicy tomato chutney and roasted garlic with thyme mashed potatoes, freeform spinach lasagna with pesto tofu filling, 4-cheese baked macaroni and cheese, chocolate mousse tart with fresh cream and berries, lemon cloud cake with coconut icing, and creme brulee of the day. Monday-Sunday 5 PM-12 AM. Sunday Bruch 11 AM-3 PM.

3rd Avenue Nite Club - 666 3rd Avenue North. A major club for Gothamites fifteen years ago, the 3rd Avenue Nite Club has spent most of the past decade closed, as it abruptly went bankrupt shortly after the emergence of the Batman as a crimefighter in Gotham City. Recently it has reopened under new management and has become a popular spot for the goth crowd, as well as members of Gotham's nightlife with darker sensibilities. Hours from 10 PM -3 AM.

Cop Shop - 163 83rd Street, described as "just down the street from the 83rd Street Precinct." 555-9111. Great illustration of Jim Gordon having a cup of coffee on their opening day. Restaurant with a law-enforcement theme. Menu includes smoked pastrami sandwiches with waffle fries and dill slaw, bacon and egg breakfast sandwich, chili, 20 kinds of donuts, and of course coffee. Open 6 AM-9PM, carry-out window 24 hours. Entrees $6-12.

Copper Blue - Another upscale eatery, 5914 N. Fairfield, 555-9866. Menu items include scallops with curry-cauliflower puree, braised short ribs with Chinese greens, and roasted tomato cream soup with blue croutons. Chef is Michael Tsonton. Dinner Tues-Sun, 5:30-11 PM. Average entree $22 and up.

Pie Hole - Pizza place, described as better than Luigi's Pizza, located in Gotham's Little Italy. 312 Hudson Street, 555-0694. No delivery. Owned/operated by sisters Lou and Lindy Abbinanti. Hours are 11:30 AM-3:30 PM and 5-10 PM.

Iceberg Lounge - Already known to us as the Penguin's den of iniquity--um, nightclub. 1111 Harborview Drive (555-7337). $20 cover. Appetizers include smoked salmon plate, caviar on toast points, and sashimi. Hours are 7 PM-2AM (officially, at least).

The Riverside Lounge - 99 Bottle Alley. "A former dive strip club and barfly oasis, the Riverside brings Gotham a taste of 1960s nightlife." Open M-W, 6 PM-midnight. Thurs-Sun 6 PM-4AM. No cover, 2-drink minimum.

My Alibi - 80 Berkshire Place. "No fancy drinks here, just smoke, pool, and cigarettes." 7 AM-4AM 7 days a week.

Kitty City - 14 Fish Street. A bar for Catwoman fans. "House specialties include the Frosty White Tiger, the Blue Russian, and the Kittini." Drinks are served in cat-print glasses. M-W, 3-11 PM. Thurs-Sun 3 PM-2 AM, $5 cover.

Hideout - 222 Fulton Market, 555-4283. Museum/art gallery, sponsored by the Martha Wayne Outreach program, a philanthropic division of Wayne Industries. All proceeds donated to the Crime Prevention Association. Exhibits are made up of the "nefarious (but cool-looking) equipment" of Gotham's supervillains, after they've been captured by Batman. STAR Labs technicians deactivate 'em all so they're safe for visitors. Wed.-Sun. 11 AM-5 PM. Admission $6 for adults, $3 seniors and kids under 6.

Blüdhaven

Location : Southeastern New Jersey

Description : Once nicknamed, "Asbestos Town, USA," Blüdhaven started out as a whaling town, rapidly giving way to highly industrial sectors which then fell into urban decay as businesses collapsed or moved out of the area during the Depression. It's infamous for its somewhat rank odor and high crime rate. Approximately 33 minutes' drive from Gotham City, Nightwing moved here initially to help Batman solve a string of murders related to a thoroughly corrupt police force, only to remain there to carve out his own reputation away from either Batman or the Titans.

The 'Haven's littered with failed housing projects; monuments to wrongheaded Federal programs. They're mostly filled with crackheads and runaways. 'The Spine' is Blüdhaven's Main Street - the city's 'sin central' (i.e. the Red Light district.) It draws the merchant seamen and foreign sailors from the piers.

After the earthquake that struck Gotham City, rendering it a No Man's Land, Blüdhaven suddenly became prime real estate for people fleeing the city and looking to set up their new businesses there.

Powers and Abilities : Hal Jordan is a former Air Force pilot and current test pilot, and as such possesses basic training in martial arts and exceptional focus and skill in combat piloting. As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, he possesses a Green Lantern power ring. The power ring is capable of nearly any function the user can imagine, provided the user has the focus and willpower to direct the ring to enact it. Most commonly, it used to generate solid light constructs that can be used for offense or defense; to gather, record or retrieve data; or to enable the user to traverse hyperspace at faster than light velocities.

History : Hal Jordan was inducted into the Green Lantern Corps by the dying alien Abin Sur. Abin Sur had been the Lantern responsible for Sector 2814, which included Earth, and had crash-landed on the planet. Dying, he directed his ring to seek out a worthy replacement - Hal Jordan was the closest worthy recipient. His induction into the Corps was met with some skepticism from his fellow Green Lanterns - humanity was not a highly-regarded species in the universe. Still, Jordan perservered - forming some close friendships in the Corps, and making some enemies as well. The Green Lantern Sinestro, highly regarded in the Corps, was revealed by Jordan to have become the totalitarian ruler of his home planet, Korugar. He was expulsed from the Corps, and blamed Jordan.

Hal divided his time between Earth and the rest of his sector. He helped to found the JLA in the aftermath of the Appellaxian invasion, alongside The Flash, Black Canary, Martian Manhunter, and Aquaman. He also adventured for a time with Green Arrow, roaming the United States by truck and doing good where they could. He briefly retired from the Green Lantern Corps, but after the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, he helped to re-form the organization.

The next turning point in Hal's career was the destruction of his home town, Coast City, at the hands of Mongul and the Cyborg Superman. Millions of people died that day, and the events shook Hal to his core - allowing the fear-entity known as Parallax to gain a foothold in his soul. Parallax's insidious influence grew within Jordan, ultimately leading him to a decision - he would use the power of the Green Lantern Corps to restore Coast City, no matter what the cost. Hal destroyed the Green Lantern Corps and absorbed the power of the Central Power Battery, taking on the name 'Parallax'. He used his power in a failed bid to re-write time in the events of Zero Hour.

Parallax could not completely snuff out Jordan's singular will, though. Regretting what he had become, Jordan resolved to try and turn his stolen power to good uses. When the Earth was menaced by the Sun-Eater, Jordan sacrificed his life to defeat the creature and save the lives of everyone on the planet. His story did not end there, however - when the rogue angel Asmodel attempted to usurp the power of a hostless Spectre, Jordan's spirit stepped forward to bear the burden of the Spirit of Vengeance. As Jordan tried to warp the Spectre's mission into one of redemption, so too did the Spectre try to redeem Jordan - for the Parallax entity still burned within him.

The power of the Spectre and the Guardian Ganthet created a unique set of circumstances - the Green Lantern Corps was reborn, and with the Corps, Jordan was also reborn. The Parallax entity was imprisoned within the Central Power Battery once more, and now that the Green Lanterns were aware of it, they could resist its whispers - and they could also overcome the power rings' traditional limitation against the color yellow. Hal resumed his career as a member of the Justice League and as one of the Green Lanterns of Sector 2814 - the reborn Corps typically assigns two Lanterns per sector.

Subsequent to his return, another Lantern seemingly returned from the dead. Hal's former flame, Arisia, was revealed to have survived her apparent murder - only to surface as a mind-controlled thrall of the rogue Lantern Sinestro. Hal and the other Lanterns of Earth, as well as JLA allies, lead the charge to defeat Sinestro and rescue Arisia. He and Arisia have since rekindled their romance, but circumstances have made it somewhat intermittent. Hal and the other Lanterns of Earth have become painfully aware of the growing threat of the Sinestro Corps recently - the Sinestro Corps member Mongul, son of the original Mongul who destroyed Coast City, used a Black Mercy plant to torment Jordan in an attempt to break the man whom some consider to be the greatest Green Lantern.

Welcome to the Wiki for the JLA Watchtower RPG. Our playing field can be found at LiveJournal. We're a play-by-post community based on the DC Comics Universe. This Wiki is still very much under construction, but if you're interested in learning more about our game, feel free to post a thread in our fan community or send our moderator team an e-mail.

In case you didn't follow that, here's a more elaborate explanation.

We're a roleplaying community, first and foremost. Each of our players takes on one or more characters, playing them interactively with one another. It's like cooperative storytelling. We don't use rules or dice to resolve conflicts - letting the players decide for themselves how the stories should go.

We're based on LiveJournal, one of the popular 'blogging' communities. This allows a player to put up a post on our community establishing a setting or premise, and other players to join in with their characters in threaded conversations.

We're based on the DC Comics Universe - home to Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and a host of others. We have players playing characters from the popular to the obscure, and plotlines that range from four-color traditional superhero tales, to darker, Vertigo-style entries.

Nightwing

Powers and Abilities : Nightwing is an exceptional acrobat and martial artist, master of half a dozen fighting styles. His preferred weapons are escrima sticks. He has also been trained as a detective by the Batman, and possesses considerable skill in that area as well.

History : Dick Grayson was the youngest member of the acrobatic family known as the Flying Graysons, performers in Haly's Circus. The circus owner ran afoul of Gotham mobster Tony Zucco, and the Flying Graysons paid the price - Zucco's men sabotaged the trapeze equipment, causing Dick's parents to fall to their deaths. Bruce Wayne was in the audience that night at the circus and, moved by the tragedy so similar to his own, arranged to adopt Dick as his ward. The young acrobat's skill would ultimately be put to use fighting crime as Batman's sidekick, Robin.

For many years, Robin was Batman's loyal ally and aide, but as Dick grew older, he tired of being in the Batman's shadow. He had begun forming his own connections to the superhero community, primarily through his friends in the Teen Titans. Deciding to set out and be his own man, he developed the costumed identity of Nightwing, loosely based on a legendary Kryptonian hero he'd learned of from Superman.

As Nightwing, Dick established himself as an independent superhero, though he continued to occasionally work with Batman when the situation called for it, and even maintained an on-again, off-again romance with Barbara Gordon, AKA the first Batgirl, though he also dated his Teen Titans teammate Starfire for many years. He remained involved with most of the incarnations of the Titans teams, and currently is the nominal leader of the Titans East team in Philadelphia.

Divergences : Until a recent continuity change, Dick was married to Barbara Gordon (Oracle). The original Nightwing player wrote up a long, fantastic history of the character on that basis, and I have preserved that in a text-file attachment to this entry. The current version of Watchtower history puts Dick back as a bachelor, occasionally involved with Barbara, and with no children.

Dick's published history diverges from Watchtower around the time of Devin Grayson's run on his title. Blockbuster was in fact arrested and tried for his crimes. Tarantula was killed by Shiva for shooting Lady Vic. Blüdhaven was not decimated by Chemo. Currently leads Titans East, based out of Philadelphia.

Powers and Abilities : Barbara possesses a photographic memory, and formidable detective skills. She is also one of the foremost computer hackers in the world. She's a highly trained martial artist and gymnast as well, and has studied escrima to compensate for her spinal cord injury.

Weaknesses : Barbara is a paraplegic, due to a spinal cord injury suffered at the hands of the Joker. This limits her mobility and somewhat hampers her combat ability, but she remains a formidable hand to hand opponent.

History : Years ago, Barbara Gordon was seeking a new direction in her life. While an excellent librarian, she craved action unrelated to banned books and other attempts at censorship. She tried but was unable to become a police officer or an FBI agent. When her father, then-Captain Jim Gordon, suggested she attend a costume charity ball as a distraction, she decided to go as Gotham's mysterious Caped Crusader, Batman. But the costume became more than a way to tease her father about his association with an urban legend when Killer Moth crashed the party and tried to kidnap billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. In thwarting Killer Moth, Barbara found the direction she was looking for, and after initial resistance from Batman, became his second protege. For years she fought side-by-side with Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson) on the streets and rooftops of Gotham City.

Eventually Barbara put the cape and cowl behind her, and decided to lead a more ordinary life. But her dream was shattered the day she opened her apartment door and was brutally shot and violated by the Joker as part of a plan to drive her father mad. Barbara spent a long and angry rehabilitation struggling to deal with the knowledge that she would never walk again, as well as the additional insult that she had been nothing more than a pawn to the Joker. She also resented that the men in her life--her father, Batman, and Dick Grayson (now calling himself Nightwing)--blamed themselves for her crippling injury, feeling that they were treating her as nothing more than a helpless innocent bystander, rather than an experienced vigilante who should've known to look through the peephole before answering her door.

Determined to create a new role for herself, she adopted the online persona of Oracle, information broker, and as "Amy Beddoes" worked initially with the Suicide Squad and later the JLA and other superhero organizations. As dispatcher, mission coordinator, sysadmin, and electronic librarian, she is the Athena of the Vigilante community. Wanting to do still more, she recruited first Power Girl (an attempt which unfortunately failed with their disastrous first mission), and then Black Canary II (Dinah Laurel Lance) and later the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli) to form her own crime-fighting organization, the Birds of Prey.

Divergences : Until a recent change in history precipitated by Lex Luthor, Barbara was married to Dick Grayson, AKA Nightwing. Here is the original text describing that :

" In the jla_watchtower universe, she reconciled with Dick Grayson, and agreed to marry him. Despite her private fears about his stability after the fires at Haly's Circus and on Parkthorne, they were married July 14, 2004. Together the couple have struggled with Babs' move to Blüdhaven, the devastating news that she could not have children, Nightwing's long absence due to a rescue mission that led him to the latest Tamaranean homeworld, trying to balance the demands of their personal and professional relationships, and most recently dealing with their impending parenthood (a miracle courtesy of a visit to Themyscira, sponsored by Wonder Woman). Their daughter Mary Donna Barbara Anne Grayson (a name her father takes all the credit for) was born on September 17, 2005."

The marriage and their daughter have been retroactively erased from history, and Barbara and Dick remain occasionally romantically involved.
