Powers and Abilities : Zoom has the ability to alter time relative to himself. He can use this ability to move at "speeds" rivaling those of even Wally West, and usually "faster" than the speeds that even Wally can muster in most cases; rather than actually time travelling, Zoom is controlling the speed at which time flows around him, allowing him to go faster or slower in time than everyone around him.
History : Hunter Zolomon had a rather horrendous upbringing. His father was a serial killer who murdered many young children, and when his mother told the police, he murdered her.
Hunter became an FBI agent, specialising in the targetting of costumed criminals, so that he could understand the minds of killers such as his father, and endeavour to stop them. One case led to to not only the death of his wife's father (and their separation as a result of it), but also a permanent injury to his knee that resulted in his requiring a cane for walking and being unable to ever run again.
After arriving in
Keystone City, he got a job as a profiler, working with the police in their Department of Metahuman Hostilities. His work put him in constant contact with the Flash,
Wally West, and the two became good friends. His insight was critical in solving a number of cases, but he always resented being stuck behind a desk.
Hunter was paralysed from the waist down by
Gorilla Grodd, when Grodd stages a prison break at Iron Heights with Hunter being caught in the middle of it. He asked Wally West to use the time-travelling cosmic treadmill to prevent this from occurring, but West refused, saying that he could not risk damaging the timestream. Zolomon, feeling that Wally should be prepared to disregard such fears for the sake of their friendship, then broke into the museum and attempted to use the treadmill himself. The resulting explosion destroyed the museum and shifted Hunter's connection to time - described by
Jay Garrick as him being 'derailed' from the timeline by the explosion - thus allows Zolomon to alter the speed at which he could move in time, giving him the effect of super-speed.
His mind twisted by the accident, Zolomon decided that if he became Zoom and caused a great tragedy in Wally's life, this would help the Flash become a better hero. Zoom attacked Linda Park, Wally's wife of the time, and caused a miscarriage of their twin children. Thanks to Wally using the slight 'rips' in time that were being created by the use of Zoom's powers, Zolomon was forced into a temporal anomaly - being shoved into the rift essentially tied a 'knot' in his timeline - and ended up in a comatose state, continually watching the death of his father-in-law.
Zolomon's ex-wife, Ashley Zolomon, replaced him as profiler and spent a lot of time attempting to communicate with him. Due to a car accident, Ashley was hospitalized for some time. It is around this period that Zoom awoke from his coma, out of concern for Ashley. He cautiously chose to remain in his cell, but recently the need to cause the Flash more personal tragedy resurfaced.
Escaping from Iron Heights, Zoom joined
Deathstroke's
Secret Society, devoting himself to the "betterment" of Wally West.
During the Green Arrow's battle with
Merlyn, both
Oliver Queen and
Mia Dearden were grievously wounded. With the other major heroes battling
Miracleman in
Metropolis, Green Arrow called in a favour, the details of which are so far unknown, that resulted in Zoom's coming to their rescue and delivering them to the
Star City Hospital. Whether this has settled the favour is also not known, as neither Oliver Queen nor Hunter Zolomon are forthcoming with details of its terms.
Other Sources :Divergences : The storyline for Zoom diverges at Identity Crisis. In DCU canon, due to unintended efforts by Zoom, Wally West's twins were brought back to life. Additionally, since Final Crisis: Rogues' Revenge, Zoom has lost his powers.
