Powers and Abilities : Ted Grant possesses almost no unusual powers, instead relying on his supreme mastery of the 'sweet science', also known as 'boxing', to bust heads in the name of justice. His only confirmed paranormal ability is that he was mystically endowed with nine lives - an undetermined number of which remain. A side-effect of the nine lives is that he ages more slowly than a normal human. There are some indications that the same mystic forces that bestowed the nine lives upon him left him with enhanced night vision.
History : Ted Grant was the world heavyweight champion - and based on the inspiration of Green Lantern, decided to put his mastery of boxing to use fighting crime. Adopting the name 'Wildcat', based on his nickname in the ring, Ted originally fought solo, before joining the
JSA. Ted is responsible for having trained several of the DCU's prominent fighters, including
Black Canary,
Batman, and
Catwoman.
Ted retired with the Justice Society in the 1950's, and returned alongside his comrades when they were lured back into action. After a spinal injury temporarily robbed him of the use of his legs, he encouraged Yolanda Montez to take up his name in the battle against crime. He shortly thereafter disappeared with the team for a time into what appeared to be the mythical realm of Asgard, fighting the battle of Ragnarok again and again until circumstances allowed the
JSA to break free of the cycle. The brush with the divine left the team with renewed vigor, and Ted was no exception - he regained the ability to walk.
He remains one of the stalwarts of the Justice Society today, alongside
Jay Garrick and
Alan Scott, and he is still considered to be among the greatest martial artists of the DC Universe.
Other Sources :Divergences : Ted's continuity diverges around Identity Crisis #1 - this means he has not yet lost the last of his mystical extra lives.
