Team History:Originally organized by General Wade Eiling of the US Army, the Ultramarine Corps were conceived as a patriotic team of superhumans supported by the government. The team was originally made of four soldiers:
Scott Sawyer, Lea Corbin, Dan Stone, and
John Wether. These four soldiers were transformed into metahumans in a secret government project and organized into a new unit under the command of General Eiling. Their first mission was to recover the body of the Shaggy Man. Despite interference from
Aquaman and
Kyle Rayner, the Ultramarines were successful in recovering the Shaggy Man. Following the recovery of the Shaggy Man, the Ultramarines were ordered to lead the Army in a preemptive strike against the
Justice League. This mission was also successful, with the Ultramarines disabling most of the League's members before the deception of General Eiling was uncovered - the entire mission was a ploy by Eiling, who was dying of a brain tumor and plotted to transfer his consciousness into the body of the Shaggy Man. Though the Ultramarines realized they had been duped, they were too late to stop Eiling from transferring his mind into the Shaggy Man, giving birth to the monstrous
General. The Ultramarines sided with the League against their leader, and together the teams were able to defeat the General.
Learning that their bodies were poisoned as a result of their transformations and that they would die prematurely, the Ultramarines went AWOL, declaring themselves independent of any national influence. They built a floating city above the ruins of Montevideo, calling it
Superbia, and invited other disenchanted superheroes to join them in their new nation. Though the Ultramarines were successful in creating a new society, they were unable to find a cure to save themselves from the infection consuming their bodies.
