Powers and Abilities : Barry was a speedster, capable of the various tricks and stunts commonly associated with the power. In addition to enhanced reaction time and running speed, he could use his speed powers to manipulate air by fanning his arms at high speed. He could run on water, and had some control over the rate at which the molecules of his body vibrate, allowing for momentary intangibility. He could probably also rapidly heal wounds by consciously accelerating his metabolism, but never demonstrated this power. Barry's top speed was around the speed of light. Unlike most speedsters, Barry was able to retain information learned at super-speed in long-term memory.
History : Barry Allen was an extremely talented police scientist. While working late one night, he was struck by a mixture of chemicals and lightning - this activated his latent metagene and jump-started his connection to what would later become known as the Speed Force. Taking on the name of his childhood hero, Barry adopted a crimson costume with a lightning bolt motif to fight crime as the Flash, protecting
Central City from a variety of criminals. His battles with the city's rogues were frequent, putting him up against
Abra Kadabra, Mirror Master, Captain Boomerang,
Captain Cold,
Dr. Alchemy, and others. He even took on a sidekick when his fiancee Iris West's nephew
Wally was subjected to the same accident, giving the lad similar speed powers to Barry's.
Barry was a founding member of the
JLA, and worked with the Justice League consistently up until his death. Barry's chance discovery of the lost city of Keystone, which had been abducted into another vibrational plane by criminals, lead to him working with his inspiration, the original Flash. That partnership would later lead to the regular team-ups between the
JLA and
JSA.
Barry's life was nearly destroyed when Iris was seemingly killed by Eobard Thawne, AKA
Professor Zoom, the Reverse-Flash. He tried to move on, finding a new love in Fiona Webb, but when Thawne returned to threaten Fiona's life, Barry used lethal force to defend Fiona's life. He killed
Professor Zoom, but was found innocent on charges of manslaughter. It was a traumatic experience for Barry, leading to his disillusionment with the world. When he discovered that Iris was alive, in the 30th century, he was all too happy to leave the 20th century behind to join her. He might have lived for years in blissful retirement there, if not for the events known as the Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Anti-Monitor's threat was a danger to all worlds and all times, and Barry Allen would ultimately give his life to spare the remaining survivors of the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor's ultimate weapon.
Since his death, Barry has occasionally interacted with his protege, Wally, and other speedsters. His spirit lives on, absorbed into the nebulous Speed Force to which they can connect. Barry's wife, Iris, still lives, as well as his two grandchildren -
Jenni Ognats and
Bart Allen.
Other Sources :Divergences : Diverges at Identity Crisis #1. This eliminates a few of Barry's post-mortem cameos, and we haven't done anything like Flash : Rebirth.
