Powers and Abilities : Jay is a speedster, capable of the various tricks and stunts commonly associated with the power. In addition to enhanced reaction time and running speed, he can use his speed powers to manipulate air by fanning his arms at high speed. He can run on water, and has some control over the rate at which the molecules of his body vibrate, allowing for momentary intangibility. He can also rapidly heal wounds by consciously accelerating his metabolism. Jay's top speed was around the speed of light in his prime, skirting the edge of the Speed Force, though he finds it difficult to attain those speeds now.
Unlike most speedsters, Jay is at least somewhat able to retain information learned at super-speed in long-term memory. In addition to the age-retarding effects of his powers, he and the other members of the Justice Society that are still active were exposed to at least two sources of temporal energy in their careers that slowed their aging process. Those energies were removed by the villain Extant, but Jay still appears to be no older than his early sixties, at most.
History : A scientist by trade, Jay was given his abilities by an accident involving heavy water - this activated his latent metagene, and established his connection to a dimension that would come to be known as the Speed Force. He opted to use his newfound powers to fight crime, and became one of the founding members if the Justice Society. His career would continue into the 1950's, with the disbanding of the
JSA due to pressure from the House Un-American Activities Commission.
He was intermittently active in the period that followed, primarily confining himself to civilian life with his wife,
Joan, and his laboratory work. He was forced into action by the Thinker,
the Fiddler, and
the Shade when they used special technology to vibrate
Keystone City out of synch with the rest of the world - thanks to Jay and the relatively-young second Flash (
Barry Allen), the city was saved. When his colleagues in the Justice Society came out of retirement, he was with them - even disappearing into Limbo with them for a time. Upon their return, the
JSA resumed their heroic work.
Along with
Wildcat and
Green Lantern, Jay is once of the few people to serve with both the original
JSA and its current incarnation. He continues to play an active role on the team. Since Max Mercury's disappearance into the Speed Force, Jay and his wife, Joan, have served as the guardians of young Bart Allen, AKA
Kid Flash.
Other Sources :Divergences : Jay's history diverges around Identity Crisis #1 - meaning Wally's disappearance and Bart's death in the DCU are not in continuity for the Watchtower.
Notes : Jay's birthday is April 3rd, 1918. His identity as the Flash is public knowledge.
