Powers and Abilities : The Adversary is a strategic genius with extensive knowledge of military history and tactics. He crafts his plans with the eye of a general on campaign, earning him the respect of his henchmen. Even as a child, he knew more about military history than many professors. He is a master of disguise, masquerading as Robin, Red Robin, and Anarky in various schemes, and always his deceptions have been successful. He has also acquired some degree of martial arts knowledge through street combat with some of Gotham's toughest gang leaders - while this is not enough to defeat seasoned fighters such as Tim Drake or Jason Todd, Adversary is nevertheless a formidable opponent and should never be taken lightly. He is not above using firearms, and usually carries a Mauser as his sidearm of preference.

History : As a child, the boy who calls himself Ulysses Hadrian Armstrong (he has never been positively I.Ded) developed psychosis early in his life. Enrolled at a military academy, Armstrong learned a great deal about military history, and after by chance hearing about Gotham City desired to test his mettle by seeing if he could conquer the greatest battlefield of all. Intimidating the academy's best recruits into helping him escape the grounds and coming with him as his first henchmen, Armstrong traveled to Gotham and began using his knowledge of tactics to build his own gang, intending to challenge then-rookie criminal Black Mask for power. His thugs began calling him 'The General,' a nom de guerre he accepted willingly. He was foiled by Batman and Robin, who were both quite surprised to learn that Black Mask's challenger was just a young boy. Armstrong was arrested and sent to a Gotham correctional facility, but he was never identified, and two months later he escaped.

Armstrong later returned, having allied himself with Maxie Zeus. This time Armstrong fought Robin while Batman took on Maxie Zeus. Confident in his skills, Armstrong challenged Robin to fight with his bare hands - and was shocked when Robin soundly defeated him. Armstrong was again arrested, this time left to brood over his humiliating defeat at the hands of Robin, and when he escaped confinement again, he did not return to Gotham for a long time.

After many years, Armstrong returned to Gotham City, having grown into a burly teenager. After gathering a few followers, Armstrong went after Robin again, wanting a rematch. The fight was much more close this time, but Tim Drake was again able to best Armstrong. Incensed, Armstrong crafted himself a replica of Tim Drake's Robin costume and began aiding criminals in Gotham, hoping to ruin Robin's reputation, but he was defeated once again, this time by Robin and Spoiler.

Shortly afterward Armstrong donned the gear of the Red Robin and went after Spoiler, who was able to deduce from his movements that he was not Jason Todd. Uncovered, Armstrong revealed himself and expressed his desire to be "Robin's Joker", discarding the General alias and demanding that he be known as the Adversary. Armstrong proved a match for Spoiler, but an unlikely savior arrived in the form of the true Red Robin, Jason Todd. Outmatched, the Adversary made his escape.

Acting at the behest of an unlikely adviser, the Adversary recently masterminded the escape of Blockbuster.
