Powers and Abilities : Superhuman strength, superhuman speed, superhuman stamina, heat-vision, ice-breath, x-ray vision, superior sense of hearing, invulnerability, skilled martial artist, flight.
Weaknesses : Kryptonians are vulnerable to Kryptonite, the radioactive remains of their home planet. It can interfere with their powers and ultimately cause death. Red solar radiation, while not directly fatal, can drain the stored solar energy from their cells and leave them weakened or powerless.
History : Kara Zor-El was one of few survivors of the destruction of her home planet,
Krypton. Her parents, foreseeing the destruction that would soon meet
Krypton, dispatched the teenage Kara in a similar pod to the one that her baby cousin Kal-El was sent in. The intention was that she would reach
Earth at the same time as Kal-El and mentor him in the ways of the Kryptonians, acting as his guardian as well as a teacher.
Due to anomalies in her trajectory her pod didn't reach
Earth until Kal-El had become a fully grown adult. She remained in suspended animation until she arrived, resulting in her appearing younger than her cousin, and indeed, mentally she was. Since that point, Kal-El had to teach her the ways of humankind, and she became a hero in her own right as Supergirl. She joined various hero groups such as the Titans, while at the same time fighting evils as a hero in her own right.
During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Supergirl was one of many who sacrificed herself to save the
Earth, being grievously wounded by the Anti-Monitor whilst saving
Superman, and eventually dying in her cousin's arms. Indeed, her sacrifice was heralded as one of the most heroic at that time, but as the infinite Earths winked out of existence, as did all memory of Kara Zor-El, her life, and her death.
That would have been the end of her story, had the Crisis caused by
Mordru not shifted time, space, and magic. For reasons unknown to her, Kara Zor-El found herself floating above
Metropolis in the modern day, and as she started to take the scenes around her in, the attack on the city by Morgaine le Fey and her ogre army drew her attention. There was no
Superman. No heroes of
Metropolis whatsoever, and Supergirl had no idea where they were. Seeing no other option, and still loving the city she called home so many years ago, she charged into battle with the witch.
Other Sources :Divergences : Supergirl's history has been altered on a number of occasions in the official DCU, resulting in characters such as
Power Girl, Matrix, and more. In Watchtower continuity, this Kara is the original Kara who died in the original Crisis. The reboot of Supergirl and her reintroduction by Jeph Loeb are not in Watchtower continuity, although the character's past has been altered slightly to the stasis plot rather than the Argo City plot.
