Powers and Abilities : Sonar is a cyborg who possesses embedded micro-circuitry that allows him to manipulate sound. He is capable of projecting powerful sonic blasts from his fists, and can create larger concussive waves for more widespread damage. At close range, Sonar's sonic waves are capable of blasting skin and flesh from normal humans. He is capable of directing his sonic attacks at specific parts of the human body, such as the inner ear labyrinth, which can cause nausea and imbalance on his opponents. Sonar is also capable of producing infrasounds, such as the "brown note" which induces a laxative effect in those who hear it. He can generate infrasound low enough to induce fear and awe in those who hear it.
Sonar does not need his voice to control his sonic powers; indeed, he can even be handcuffed and still be able to use his abilities, however he is limited to all-range blasts emanating from his body in these situations.
History : Ostensible successor of the first Sonar,
Bito Wladon, the identity of this second Sonar is unknown. His life prior to becoming a criminal is largely unknown as well, though he has alluded to suffering through agonizing experiments in order to gain his powers. His body is mutilated as a result of these experiments, with his cybernetic enhancements protruding from his body. Like the Sonar before him, the new Sonar originally intended to use his powers to create an empire. After his first defeat at the hands of the
new Flash and
Green Lantern, Sonar was incarcerated, only to lead a revolt and take control of Blackgate. Green Lantern Kyle Rayner once again took on Sonar, this time with the unlikely aid of incarcerated powerhouse Sledge. The Lantern and criminal successfully defeated Sonar, but he was able to escape confinement nevertheless, and returned to fight Kyle Rayner again during the Genesis incident, when supers across the world lost their powers. Despite the temporary disadvantage, Rayner was ultimately able to triumph.
Sonar was one of the few villains who escaped being rounded up by the
Justice League during a crime control operation they conducted, thanks to a timely tipoff from the
Rainbow Raider. The two crooks shared popcorn and swapped stories as most of their compatriots were apprehended and imprisoned thanks to a mass telepathic hoodwinking of the Society courtesy of the
Martian Manhunter.
More recently Sonar had been spotted at
Roulette's new
Fight Club.
Other Sources :Divergences : Definitively stated as being of no relation to
Bito Wladon, the first Sonar. Never fought
Jade in GL #153.
