Raven to Titans Island, near the Golden Gate Bridge, and the surprising appearance of
Nightstar, the daughter of
Starfire and
Nightwing from an alternate future. Hearing that her home universe had been destroyed,
Starfire and
Nightwing accepted
Nightstar as a family member ("genetically but not chronologically," as
Nightwing put it). While trying to adjust to this new universe, with people who were almost but not quite like those she had known and loved,
Nightstar was startled to meet
Dream of the Endless, who claimed that she was at risk for being collected by his sister, Death, because
Nightstar had been destined to die with the rest of her universe. Having grown up with a profound fear of dying,
Nightstar quickly accepted Dream's offer of protection in the form of a contract, binding her as his servant.
Shortly after
Nightstar began learning how to move within the Dreaming, heroes sensitive to magic felt a disturbance that seemed to shake the foundations of reality, but were uncertain of the cause or the consequences ... until strange, random events began to be reported from around the globe. Unusually strong or out of season natural disasters were followed by (brief) appearances of people from other universes. Perhaps the most startling visitor was Brainiac-5, who for a while took up residence in the Clocktower with Dick and Barbara Grayson as he labored to find a way to return to his own time. However, his attempt to be reunited with his teammates was foiled, and he returned to
Earth to join forces with the
JLA and other heroes seeking to learn the cause of the crisis.
In time, it was revealed that the disturbances in reality were caused by
Croutex, a chaos god from another universe who sought to take control of the realm of Destruction, the wayward member of the Endless. While the other Endless had been aware of
Croutex's plan, they had felt unable to act directly in defense of their brother, and had instead arranged for
Nightstar to act as their secret champion--so secret that she herself was unaware of the role she was to play, beyond a cryptic prophecy offered by Dr. Fate. Searching for Destruction, with the assistance of Delirium,
Nightstar found the wandering Endless, but he dismissed her concerns and continued his journey.
Beyond the chaos caused by the disturbances in reality, cultists who worshipped
Croutex began their own disturbances in cities around the world, and across the multiverse. The mystics and other magically-talented heroes speculated that such random violence served to raise power for
Croutex, bringing the god closer to its ascension as an Endless. As the
JLA and other heroes fought against the destruction and mayhem caused by the
Croutex-cultists,
Nightstar pulled
Nightwing and
Starfire into the Dreaming with her to face
Croutex in battle. The chaos god was ultimately defeated by Destruction, who intervened at last. With the multiverse still in disarray, Dr. Fate called upon Earth's greatest heroes to dream of their reality as it was, restoring the status quo.
