Powers and Abilities : Metamorpho's powers derive from exposure to the mystical Orb of Ra, which transformed him into one of the 'metamorphae', a group of elemental creatures that were once used by the sun-god Ra to battle against Apep, the serpent. He can transform his body into any element found in the human body, including partial transformations and compounds synthesized from those elements. His powers also give him complete control over his own shape, but he lacks the specific control necessary to synthesize his old human appearance. In addition to the enhanced strength that he can manifest while emulating certain elements, Rex is all but indestructible and may be entirely immortal - he has reconstructed himself after apparent deaths many times.

History : Rex Mason was an adventurer and mercenary, until his life was changed while on a job for Simon Stagg. Sent to recover the mysterious Orb of Ra, Rex instead found himself trapped with the artifact and transformed by its energies. His human appearance was forever destroyed, but much to Stagg's chagrin, his daughter Sapphire remained in love with Rex, regardless of the change in his form. Simon Stagg and his right-hand man, Java, would be recurring antagonists in Rex's heroic career, which would see him become one of the first people to turn down membership in the JLA.

Rex later went on to join Batman in the first incarnation of the Outsiders, and remained with the team up until his first death - turned against his team due to brainwashing by a Manhunter agent. Reconstituted in the wake of the Dominator's Gene-Bomb detonation, he joined Justice League Europe for a time. Owing to partial amnesia, he had forgotten Sapphire and carried on a brief relationship with Crimson Fox. When he recovered his memories, he discovered something else - thanks to an experimental procedure he'd undergone before his first death, he and Sapphire had conceived a son, Joey - a son who had inherited unstable versions of Rex's own powers. Joey's abilities were neutralized by exposure to the Orb of Ra, and in turn, the Orb was seemingly neutralized.

Metamorpho's next death came during the arrival of the Hyperclan, disguised White Martians intent on conquering Earth. He saved the lives of the rest of the Justice League by serving as an escape pod so they could survive atmospheric re-entry from their disintegrating orbital headquarters. His second return from death followed soon thereafter - Sapphire Stagg, making use of the Orb of Ra, restored Rex to the world of the living.

Rex was recently elected to fill a slot in the expanded roster of the JLA, continuing to use his amazing versatility in the fight against evil.
