Powers and Abilities : Loki is a member of the Asgardian pantheon of gods, and possesses a wide and formidable range of abilities. He is a master of the forces of magic, possessing more sorcerous skill than perhaps anyone else on Asgard. The brunt of his powers are bound as he himself is, but in the past Loki has shapeshifted between a wide variety of forms, granted paranormal abilities to ordinary men and things, imbued himself with an invulnerable force field that stopped him from being beheaded, flown, paralyzed men and gods both, cast illusions, and teleported across time and space both. He was able to complete disable
Circe's magical abilities once, at the height of his power.
He is also half-giant, and possesses some physical attributes of his jötunn brethren: tall size (while not as tall as the thirty-footer Jötnar, his natural form is nearly ten feet tall), enhanced strength, and superhuman stamina. His jötunn nature makes him extremely difficult to kill: he has survived impalement and has total immunity to all known diseases and toxins (though they can cause Loki pain if not kill him). Loki is also an adept schemer and master manipulator.
Weaknesses : While Loki can compel and control the actions of other beings, he cannot read their minds outright. He also has an unfortunate tendency to alienate allies with his double dealing and propensity for betrayal.
History : Trickster god of the Æsir, Loki was adopted into Asgard, born the only son of a giant father and an Asgardian mother. Living to stir up trouble, Loki proved in equal occasion an ally and enemy to the Æsir. He often helped the gods in sticky situations, but just as often, it was he who caused those situations in the first place! Crafty and malicious yet charming and noble, Loki has always been a polarizing figure in Asgard. He married the Asgardian Sigyn and had trysts with the giantess Angrboda, siring three monstrous children with her. He later sired four more children through other mistress, though through it all Sigyn remained loyal to him.
As time passed however, Loki became less of a prankster and more of a menace. His wit became barbed; he sowed discord among his fellow gods and gloried at their rage. Finally, Loki went too far, engineering the death of Balder, the god of light. For this unforgivable crime his fellow Æsir hunted him down, capturing him and chaining him in a cave deep beneath Asgard. A great serpent was placed above his head, dripping venom upon him. Ever-loyal Sigyn sacrificed her life to kill the creature, but Loki was still imprisoned, and now completely without allies.
Not one to give up, Loki spent the thousands of years that followed using what little power he had left as well as he could. He gathered a following made up of the lesser Asgardian races: dwarves, trolls, and the like. He extended his tendrils to the Earth, taking root in a few carefully-chosen disciples. And most recently, he enthralled the then-deceased demigoddess
Ice to his will, intending to use her to take revenge on the Æsir. Before this could happen, a rescue team made up of
Guy Gardner,
Fire, and
Merlynne came to Asgard, breaking Loki's control over their friend and spiriting her from Asgard.
It has been prophesied that Loki's escape will mark the beginning of Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods.
