Powers and Abilities : Bart is a speedster, capable of the various tricks and stunts commonly associated with the power. In addition to enhanced reaction time and running speed, he can use his speed powers to manipulate air by fanning his arms at high speed. He can run on water, and has some control over the rate at which the molecules of his body vibrate, allowing for momentary intangibility. He can also rapidly heal wounds by consciously accelerating his metabolism. Bart's top speed is around the speed of light, skirting the edge of the Speed Force.
Bart also has an eidetic memory, and unlike many speedsters, can actually retain information he learns while reading using his superspeed. He has the unique power to generate energy-based duplicates of himself, composed of Speed Force energy. These 'scouts', as he calls them, can be used for reconnaissance or simple errands. Since one of his 'scouts' was killed during the events of Our Worlds at War, he has declined to use this power.
History : Bart is the grandson of
Barry Allen, AKA The Flash (II). His parents were Don Allen, and Meloni Thawne, and he was born in the 30th century. His superspeed powers were active from birth, and as a consequence, he aged rapidly. Scientists constructed a unique virtual reality environment that could cope with Bart's sped-up perceptions, to help him adjust - so he lived 14 years of his life in two chronological years. Not wishing to lose her son, Meloni arranged to take Bart to the 20th century, to visit his grandfather's protege, Wally West. (
The Flash III) Wally helped Bart gain control of his abilities, and stopped the accelerated aging process.
Bart remained in the 20th century, and adopted the identity of 'Impulse' (inspired by a comment from
Batman), and later, Kid Flash. He was briefly a member of an incarnation of the Titans, and then became a founder of Young Justice, along with
Superboy and
Robin. When Young Justice disbanded, Bart would join the
Teen Titans again, along with most of his colleagues from Young Justice. Bart lived with aging speedster Max Mercury, who functioned as his guardian and mentor in the ways of the Speed Force. The pair fought crime in Manchester, Alabama for a time. Later, when Max passed on to join with the Speed Force, Jay Garrick (
The Flash I) would take Bart in, to live with him and his wife in
Keystone City.
Bart currently operates as Kid Flash, with the
Teen Titans. He changed his codename from 'Impulse' after an early encounter with
Deathstroke, at the time possessed by
Jericho.
Jericho, mostly insane, sought to destroy the Titans to discourage anyone from allowing young superheroes to be put in the line of danger. He destroyed Bart's knee with a shotgun blast - Bart now has an artificial replacement, but it doesn't hamper his running ability. His long-distance "girlfriend", Carol, still lives in Manchester.
Other Sources :Divergences : Diverges at Identity Crisis #1. Infinite Crisis never occurred in our continuity, so Bart never adopted the mantle of the Flash, nor did he die in the line of duty.
