Powers and Abilities : Johnny
was a speedster, capable of the various tricks and stunts commonly associated with the power. In addition to enhanced reaction time and running speed, he could use his speed powers to manipulate air by fanning his arms at high speed. He could run on water, and had some control over the rate at which the molecules of his body vibrate, allowing for momentary intangibility. He could also rapidly heal wounds by consciously accelerating his metabolism, but it is unknown whether or not he ever exploited this power. Johnny's top speed was likely around half of the speed of light, in his prime, though in his final battle the energies of the Speed Force allowed him to exceed that threshold. Unlike most speedsters, Johnny possessed the power to fly - a process that resembles running on air.
History : Johnny's former guardian, Professor Gill, taught him a mathematical formula that the professor had discovered in an Egyptian tomb. Through that formula, '3X2(9YZ)4A' , Johnny was able to tap into the mysterious energy of the Speed Force, thanks to his meta-gene. He began a crime-fighting career, and would soon thereafter become a founding member of the All-Star Squadron alongside members of the
JSA,
Firebrand,
Robotman, Commander Steel, and
Liberty Belle. He and the original Flash,
Jay Garrick, were friendly rivals. His heroic career would continue into the 1950's, when most of the so-called 'mystery-men' retired due to pressure from the House Un-American Activities Commission.
He was intermittently active thereafter, emerging from retirement periodically to take on specific menaces or to fight alongside a re-formed Justice Society. Johnny also had an on-again, off-again relationship with Liberty Belle, AKA Libby Lawrence, and the two would eventually marry for a time. Their daughter,
Jesse, would inherit powers from both of her parents.
Johnny gave his life in battle against the villainous Savitar to save his daughter's life - in helping to defeat the villain, Johnny was absorbed into the Speed Force - joining
Barry Allen in the speedster's Valhalla.
