Team History: The Justice League was formed in the wake of the Appellaxians' appearance on
Earth, with the intent to use it as a battleground.
Black Canary, the
Martian Manhunter,
the Flash (Barry Allen),
Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), and
Aquaman, along with reservists
Superman and
Batman, were the initial roster, but the League would quickly expand - adding honorary member Snapper Carr, then
Green Arrow, the
Atom, and many others. The JLA was inspired by the example of the Justice Society, and worked with that older generation of heroes on a number of occasions.
The League has had many incarnations over the years; it was shut down in the wake of
Darkseid's plan to turn the
Earth against its heroes, and reformed as an international organization with direct ties to the United Nations. That incarnation would splinter into several branches, and eventually lose U.N. sponsorship, before being completely defeated by the Hyperclan, a group of White Martians impersonating superheroes. The Justice League's current incarnation was formed in response to the threat of the Hyperclan, founded this time by
Superman,
Batman,
Wonder Woman,
Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner),
the Flash (Wally West),
Aquaman, and the
Martian Manhunter. They operate from a base on the moon, incorporating technology from a dozen worlds, called the Watchtower.
Notes: 'Founder' members have special voting privileges according to the JLA charter. An agreement with the U.N. limited the active membership to twelve, barring special exceptions - this limit has recently been
raised to eighteen.
