Powers and Abilities : Tora possesses the ability to generate and manipulate ice and snow. She most commonly focuses this ability through her hands, though she is able to use her ability with any part of her body - she uses her feet to create platforms of ice to travel upon and can project unfocused freezing blasts from her body. A very restrained person, the limits of Tora's ability are largely uncharted, but in fits of anger she has offered a taste of what she is truly capable of: she has frozen a large table in seconds, causing it to shatter under her fists. Tora does not suffer any ill effects from being in contact with objects that she has frozen with her ability, and as
Magog noticed, her hands don't even get cold as a result of using her ability.
At one point Tora was given a power boost by the
Overmaster. As a result of this power increase her freezing abilities became much more powerful and destructive, expanding to a certain level of control over the weather. She also gained super strength and the ability to fly as a result of this power-up: notably, she retained these abilities even after being killed by the Overmaster and then resurrected. Tora is also a naturally proficient hand-to-hand combatant.
History : Tora Olafsdotter has led a somewhat unusual life. Born the princess of a tribe of primitive, isolated Norsemen with a mystical secret, Tora spent her formative years completely removed from society outside of her tribe. Like many of the tribe's members, Tora was born with a unique ability - in her case, the ability to control and manipulate ice and snow. It was not until her late teens that Tora met a member of the outside world - an American explorer, who captivated the tribe with tales of a world they'd never known. Against all odds, the explorer convinced Tora to return to civilization with him.
The government of Norway petitioned Tora to join the Global Guardians, in exchange for swearing to protect her people and let them live as they had. Tora agreed, becoming Norway's new representative in the Global Guardians. Tora's role in the Guardians was short: after UN funding was withdrawn from them in the wake of the
JLA's reformation, the team collapsed. She had made a strong friendship within that short time, however: the metahuman
Fire had quickly bonded with Tora, and now talked her into coming with her to make a bid for Justice League membership. An offshoot of the JLA, Justice League International, was eager to take them on.
Ice served with the Justice League for years, defending the world from the likes of
Lex Luthor,
Despero, and
Vandal Savage, among others. She confronted the alien monster
Doomsday when it invaded
Metropolis, and was one of the few team members still standing after Doomsday decimated the League. She also formed a romantic relationship with
Guy Gardner, the hothead of the team. She was later enthralled by the
Overmaster, a cosmically powerful alien. The Overmaster enhanced Tora's power, appointing her the new leader of his team, the Cadre. Despite clashing with her friends under the Overmaster's influence, Tora was able to break the mental hold and defy the Overmaster. As punishment for her rebellion, the Overmaster killed her.
Upon her death, Tora's soul went to Asgard, where she learned that she was in fact a demigoddess, child of the Æsir. Forgetting her mortal life, Tora became the princess of a tribe of fallen warriors, in a role very similar to her early life. Unfortunately, the fallen god Loki, bound by his fellow Æsir, sensed Tora's power and plotted to use her to free himself. Luring Tora to the cave he was imprisoned within using visions of her mortal friends, Loki compelled Tora into donning a mystical golden torque, enthralling her into serving his will.
Though under Loki's hypnotic control, Tora was able to send a vision to Fire, who gathered her old flame Guy and the mage
Merlynne to find her. The group expected Tora to be in Hell (where they had previously seen an illusion of her), only to find themselves in Asgard. A cult of dwarves loyal to Loki quickly captured the trio, who brought them to Loki's cavern. Loki turned the demigoddess on her friends, who were unable to fight back not wanting to hurt her. Thanks to quick thinking on the part of Fire, the torque was broken from Tora's neck, and she was able to fight Loki alongside her friends. Without defense, the chained god was defeated, and the team returned to the mortal plane.
Since her resurrection Tora has rejoined the JLA and rekindled her relationship with Guy.
