Powers and Abilities : Beatriz DaCosta has the ability to convert her entire body into green flame. An exotic viral infection triggered a mutation in Fire’s metagene, enhancing her abilities considerably - originally, Fire's only ability was the power to expel green flames from her mouth. In her flame state, Fire can fly and use pyrokinesis to control and manipulate flame outside of herself as well as project flame blasts from her own body. Her flame body is intangible and can pass through solid objects. Fire is also a trained investigator and espionage agent who has had some training from Batman in hand-to-hand combat. Most interestingly, Fire has some resistance to mind control: as a native speaker of Portugese, she can 'shut out' mental commands given in English.

Weaknesses: Fire originally had great difficulty in controlling her powers and they frequently activated without her consent when she became distressed or angry. While she has come far in this regard, DaCosta still has outbursts which become heated very quickly, a consequence of having a quick temper. Fire must also wear flame-retardant clothing, as activating her powers will destroy any clothing she wears that isn't flameproof.

History : Originally known by the superhero name of 'Green Fury,' Beatriz DaCosta has a colorful history. From humble beginnings as an amateur model in Rio, Beatriz worked her way to become a covert agent for the Brazilian government's Espiões Nacionais. In a mission gone wrong, Beatriz was trapped in a pyroplasmic explosion that awakened her dormant metagene, granting her the ability to exhale an eight-inch burst of fire. Taking up her superhero name, Beatriz became a member of the Global Guardians, an international superhero team.

After the UN withdrew their financial support from the Guardians, Beatriz talked her friend and fellow superhero Tora Olafsdotter, then known as Icemaiden, into joining up with the new superhero team, the Justice League International. Short-handed, the JLI took both women on, and while Beatriz became known as 'Green Flame' in honor of the occasion, she eventually switched her codename a third this, this time to the much more succinct "Fire" in affinity with Icemaiden's shortening of her name to "Ice".

Fire served the longest term of any JLI member, though she was benched for a time after an encounter with the alien monster Doomsday resulted in the temporary loss of her powers. During these period of depowerment, her friend Tora was killed at the hands of the Overmaster. Emotionally distraught, Beatriz engaged in a brief romantic relationship with Ice's former lover, Guy Gardner, and then a second relationship with fellow JLI member Nuklon. When the JLI collapsed Fire returned to Brazil, intending to reestablish herself as her country's protector. Unfortunately, she was not fully able to take this role, which she blamed on the Martian Manhunter, of all people, due to his popularity in the Southern hemisphere.

Fire recently was instrumental in the return of Ice to life, and the two have resumed their close friendship and modeling careers. Both accepted invitations to join the expanded roster of the JLA, where Fire serves alongside her current romantic interest, Kyle Rayner.
