History : Brainiac is one of Superman's most important enemies ever since the villain's first appearance, responsible for shrinking Kandor, the capital city of Krypton.

At his core, Brainiac is formless, but his favoured appearance is as a bald (save for a set of red diodes protruding from his skull), green-skinned android from the planet Colu. BRAINIAC is said to stand for "BRAIN InterActive Construct."

Brainiac's intent changes over time, from wanting to dominate the human race to wanting to create his own planet of androids to take place of fallen Colu. His one constant is his hatred for Superman, as the last surviving Kryptonian. Brainiac sees Superman in the guise of a god-like "Master Programmer" who was responsible for a massive conspiracy to destroy Brainiac and keep him from achieving perfection and domination of the universe. From this vision, Brainiac concludes that it is necessary for him to destroy the Master Programmer in order to achieve his goal; therefore, his ultimate goal is to destroy Superman, whom he sees as the Master Programmer's "angel of death."

It is not beyond Brainiac to interact with the lesser races, however. He has adopted the personality of many professors (his favourite being that of Prof. Milton Fine) in order to seek out humans of higher intelligence. He rationalises that any truly intelligent humans would attend higher science lectures, and by a pure process of elimination he hopes to provide himself wrong, and find a human with more than a 'basic' mind. So far he feels disappointed by this venture.

Brainiac has also taken to observing the actions and breaking points of humans; especially heroes. It is not above him to set up a contrived plot which will tax a hero in a particularly vicious way, just to see how he or she reacts. In doing so, Brainiac intends to see how much it takes to control a supposed 'superhero', and whether they're truly different to the rest of their race.

Brainiac has a spaceship, in which he contains bottles of shrunken cities. Among his other technological powers, his favourite is size reduction. He has successfully miniaturised hundreds of cities across the galaxy, and it is only because of Superman destroying this technology in recent years that he hasn't done the same to Metropolis. Brainiac feels he has more than enough time to repair his powers though, and start shrinking cities once more. It's his collection, after all.

Brainiac appeared for the first time in years at the side of Onomatopoeia, during the villain's torture of four humans. None of the heroes are aware of his control of the overall situation, however.

In addition, Brainiac has made sporadic appearances since then. As Milton Fine, he appeared in the Metropolis General Hospital after the battle between Miracleman and Superman, presumably to collate information. He has also kidnapped and lobotomised Toyman Winslow Schott, and replaced him with an android.
