History : As a young girl, Dinah Laurel Lance was thrilled (and sometimes terrified) by the adventures of her mother, the original Black Canary, and those of her honorary uncles in the Justice Society of America. At age 19, armed with a sonic cry and an already formidable mastery of judo, she teamed up with The Flash (Barry Allen), the Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter in repelling an alien invasion of Earth. Soon after their initial team-up, the five young heroes formed the Justice League of America.

Early in her crime-fighting career, Dinah Lance met and fell in love with Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow. Their relationship is perhaps best described as "stormy," for despite their passionate love for each other and for their vocations as crime-fighters, Dinah finally could take no more of Oliver's infidelities. Their separation seemed permanent upon Oliver Queen's death.

Seeking the sense of purpose she had lost since her younger days, having more or less settled in Seattle, one day Dinah was contacted by the mysterious Oracle. The unseen information broker invited Dinah to move to Gotham City as a partner in the enterprise that came to be known as the Birds of Prey. Outfitted with a new costume and a new mission, the Black Canary was revitalized by her partnership with Oracle and once again took her place as a crime-fighter to be reckoned with. Despite the curveball of Oliver Queen's return from the dead, Dinah Lance is determined to carve her own place in the world: not merely her mother's daughter, not merely the inamorata of a male hero, but a strong, independent woman who puts her heart and soul (as well as her fists, feet, and Canary Cry) into making this world a better place.

Divergences : In the JLA Watchtower universe, Dinah has remained in Gotham City. She assisted Oliver Queen in the rescue of his son Connor, continues to delight in her goddaughter Lian Harper, and still acts as Oracle's main operative, though she is now joined by the Huntress in those missions.
