Powers and Abilities : A superb athlete and a keen intellect. Batman is known as the World's Greatest Detective, and not without cause. He supplements his intense combat training and intellectual acumen with a variety of gadgets, funded by the deep pockets of his alter-ego, Bruce Wayne.
History : Orphaned at a young age, by a mugger named Joe Chill, Bruce Wayne resolved to wage a neverending war on crime - adopting the Bat as his symbol to strike terror into the hearts of criminals. He adopted young
Dick Grayson, another orphan, as his ward and sidekick. Along with fellow costumed adventurers, Batman helped to found the
Justice League of America, and served in several of its incarnations. After one of the League's missions, they returned to discover
Dr. Light on their satellite headquarters - he had just sexually assaulted
Sue Dibny, wife of the
Elongated Man. Batman returned to discover the League attempting to re-write Light's personality, and objected. To preserve the League,
Zatanna was obliged to wipe Batman's memories of the events - a fact he would later deduce.
His relationship to the Justice League was strained for years after that. His sidekick, Dick Grayson, left to become a crimefighter in his own right.
Jason Todd would become the second Robin, but
the Joker apparently murdered him. Batman became more withdrawn, as a result. A young man named
Timothy Drake deduced Batman's identity, however, and began to make progress in getting Batman to reconnect to his colleagues, while fighting at his side as the third Robin.
Today, Batman works with a number of allies -
Nightwing,
Robin,
Oracle and her
Birds of Prey - as well as being an active member in the current incarnation of the Justice League of America.
